The profiling tool on this page has been developed by Information Services Division (ISD) Scotland. It is being included as part of the Age Awareness Toolkit in Scotland to provide a further option for those looking to age profile their workforce.
Description of the tool
The tool has two sections which allow for different levels of focus. The first section groups staff together according to 5 year age brackets, whilst the second breaks the workforce down into individual ages.
Each section consists of a set of instructions, a data entry page and an output page which provides a graphic representation of the data which has been entered.
Data required and how to use the tool
You will need to have data on retirement rates, joiner headcount and the current age of staff in post. You can use one year’s worth of data for retirement and jointers but, as with the UK Planning Tool, it may be better to use aggregate data for multiple years for these values to reduce the distorting effect of an unusually high or low value in a given year.
You will also need to enter a projected growth in workforce in coming years.
Once the data has been entered, the output page will display a graph of the age profile in a given future year. The dropdown menu on this page allows you to choose the year and track the predicted age profile of the workforce year on year.
If you would like help or advice on using the tool, you can e-mail ISD at nss.isdwfdinfo@nhs.net.
